My name is Sean Chavel. I was born in San Fernando Valley, CA in 1977. Outdoor interests growing up included hiking, tennis and baseball. But movie interest peaked with "Born on the 4th of July: (1989) and "Total Recall" (1990) of all unlikely titles, on top of Stanley Kubrick — a typical inspiration. I wasn't frightened as I feared by Arnold Schwarzenneger. Later that year I wondered why the name Martin Scorsese was such a big deal. "GoodFellas" was hyped months before its release, so I decided to check out "Taxi Driver." After my eye-opening discovery of Scorsese, I went full-throttle by seeing every movie as humanly possible which meant cable and VHS rentals. Soon after, I discovered revival movie houses. "Citizen Kane" (1941) premiered at #16 the first time I saw it at age 14. Later, it would peak at #3. I made a series of stop motion animation films throughout high school that were small festival ready, not bad considering I had no traditional editing equipment. I wanted to become a screenwriter, though, to capitalize on talent that teachers had been lauding. By college, I knew much about Alfred Hitchcock, Billy Wilder, Francis Ford Coppola, Woody Allen, Charlie Chaplin and the very underrated Bob Fosse. But in film classes I discovered Ingmar Bergman, Francois Truffaut and Louis Malle (also underrated). I began writing professionally about film in 2002. I over exaggerated on films here and there to get a name, to get my name in ads. But I quickly decided to toss away with hyberbole. But when I say the latest by Christopher Nolan, Clint Eastwood or David Fincher is a masterpiece, I mean it, because I've saved praise. But what I mostly want to do with FlickMinute is create a new dialogue about film, a less pretentious and casual-friendly discussion. You should be able to spend a few minutes on your Friday mornings here, and if you got extra time, browse through the archives of time. I will continuously be backing up the archives with new uploading material.
