Wedding day festivities are romantic for about five minutes. Grace (Samara Weaving) marries into an unorthodox blueblood family with a family fortune in board games inĀ Ready or Not, and they expect the bride to play midnight games on the wedding night. If you know going in this is a horror film than you have quickly gathered that the game is going to get quickly out of hand. This trash entertaining mash-up of “The Most Dangerous Game” meets “The Purge” with “Clue” costuming, set upon real estate a tad less regal than “Last Year at Marienbad” is a debauched hoot, and it contains a blood-splattering finale that’s out of late 70’s Brian DePalma.
Weaving makes for an adept heroine, but the movie makes the same old genre mistakes of not letting her finish off certain adversaries while they’re down, and there are too many trips up and down the main manor hallway (you’re being hunted, use more rooms and secret rooms, don’t you say?). Still, “Ready or Not” does more things right than wrong, and it plays as a merciless revenge tale against those breed we cannot stand: the class of the rich, the uppity and entitled patriarch who are totally absent of manners and removed from any sense of common decency. Grace (hehe, her name, get it?) has manners and an upright set of core beliefs even if she’s kicking your ass in defense, dammit.
95 Minutes. Rated R.
