Sleepy and mentally squishing to the point you walk out dumb and dumber after it’s over. If there’s one thing I learned in the course of two hours it’s that I cannot trust Jim Jarmusch again to deliver an offbeat genre picture, he’s too enamored indulging in letting us know that he doesn’t want to deliver a typical genre picture. Fine. But if it is a zombie movie, even with Jarmusch’s trademark dryness, it should be made as a fun lark and directed with at least a little zip. His abilities are negligible and lurching, and the nighttime cinematography is shoddy.
Jarmusch’s directing message to Bill Murray, Chloe Sevigny, Danny Glover, Tom Waits and Selena Gomez must have been, “read your lines slower,” and with Adam Driver and Steve Buscemi, “read your lines a little faster than the others” for The Dead Don’t Die. There might be a few scraps of wry amusement with the zombies in the second half, but it’s never going to work when you’ve bored your audience before getting to that point. When the first two bodies show up at the diner, and one cop, then a second cop, then a third cop, go in to check out the carnage, it’s really one, then another, then another – it’s the worst edited scene in a single movie in 2019. Buscemi wears a MAGA hat, by the way, but there’s no spin to it. He just wears it. Then again, monotony is everywhere in this Jarmusch dud.
