We all know by now that Daniel Day-Lewis has assumed the role of the 16th American president Lincoln, but at least for me, I had no consciousness of who else was in the movie until I saw the trailer. Sally Field, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jackie Earl Haley, James Spader, John Hawkes, David Strathairn, Bruce McGill, Tim Blake Nelson, Hal Holbrook and Tommy Lee Jones as Thaddeus Stevens. Director Steven Spielberg appears to have employed the similar burnished antique look he used for his 19th century slavery drama “Amistad” (1997). All Spielberg movies are important, but there are the ones by him that are self-consciously important. This is one of them, but it also looks like it entertains.
